Hokusai's ‘The Great Wave of Kanagawa’ is one of Japan's most recognisable works. In this recreation it has been constructed entirely from a traditional repeat pattern of interlocking manji, known as ‘Sayagata’. The pattern is traditionally used in the backgrounds of kimono.
“I wanted to be engulfed by the artwork, to get to know it intimately and feel the intensity of the original. Living and working in the space, I find it more serene than intense. In surrounding myself with one of my favourite patterns and artworks, I found tranquility.”
