Tā moko is the permanent marking of the face as traditionally practised by Māori
Under the Currency & Banknotes Act 1928 it is illegal to deface banknotes by printing, writing or impressing upon them words, letters or figures.
The repeat pattern featured on The Bank of England's £5 Series E is used to create the Tā moko design. The notes ceased to be legal tender in May 2017.
