Illegal tender

Tā moko – the permanent marking of the face traditionally practised by Māori. The Bank of England's £5 Series E (variant) featured a repeat pattern that forms the basis of the Tā moko design.

Under the Currency & Banknotes Act 1928 it is illegal to deface banknotes by printing, writing or impressing upon them words, letters or figures. The notes ceased to be legal tender in May 2017.
